More than 200,000 people in Lalitpur have benefited from a water supply programme implemented by the Urban Environment Management Society over 15 years, the organisation stated in its report. UEMS president Prem Singh Maharjan said the organisation has extended its work beyond Lalitpur, to Siraha, Udayapur and Dolakha districts where UEMS had been working on a range of issues, including drinking water, health and sanitation, disaster risk reduction, child protection and resilient livelihoods. Lalitpur Metropolitan City Mayor Chiribabu Maharjan lauded UEMS's efforts that had resulted in various places being declared open defecation free zones. The government has begun its ODF campaign with the aim of making the nation open defecation free by 2017. UEMS has been facilitating the government to implement the campaign in Lalitpur, Siraha, and Udayapur, among other districts. - HNS.
